O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. She made it into the top 100 rounds due to the fact that judges were awed at her singing performance. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges but suffered significant losses in the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the lowest 3 and 2 spots respectively. The judges were shocked by the results and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa, who had the best singing abilities. O'Neil was never in the bottom 3 again after an impressive string of performances. The two other performances she gave on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil was able to advance into the final two of the finals of the competition, Werner reportedly forecast that morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was announced by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
